Building consent from bottom up
Consent is key to documenting human history and particularly oral history. But in a world of 7.5 billion people that speak more than 6,500 languages and form thousands of societies, there cannot be just one kind of consent. What if the diverse group of participants at the CC Summit explain what an acceptable way of asking consent sound like in their respective societies? Can their proposed ways form an inclusive basis of "consent-seeking" which the CC community can further to accommodate their needs?
This is going to be an interactive session and the participants can share their own experiences from different parts of the world. You will have an option to join the alpha and beta testing of this conceptual framework.
RESOURCES
  • Worksheet to be used during the discussion
  • OpenSpeaks, a project for additional guides on consent, open licensing and documentation of languages
  • [Accessible] Pad if the worksheet is not accessible for you (also for taking notes or sharing comments)
  • Ideas generated by participants are documented and summarized here

Vocabulary and The Future of CC's Online Presence
Vocabulary is a new design system to unite the web facing Creative Commons. It is a system of style rules, usage guidelines, constant values like colors and an entire library of UI components built upon these principles, with the goal to standardise CC's web presence. Encompassing the entire spectrum from websites (eg. CC.org homepage) to apps (eg. CC Search and CC Chooser), Vocabulary aims to provide a homogeneous and seamless user-experience across all of CC services while speeding up design and development. The talk will introduce Vocabulary to a technical as well as non-technical audience.

How to build a sustainable open education community. Lessons learned from eight years of OERcamps
The concept and ideas behind CC can only strive if sustained by a strong community of practitioners, and being continuously introduced to newcomers in a welcoming environment. OERcamps, a series of barcamps for practitioners of Open Education provide just that. A strong base is provided for getting to know and sharing experiences with the use of CC licenses in education. We will discuss our experiences with OER community-building events run in different formats including traditional workshops, unconferences, hackathons, and other alternative formats that have taken place over the past 8 years.

How to position “Free” in Free Music Archive?
We have reached an important moment in time. Access to digital music is perceived as free however fair remuneration could lead to more sustainable revenue models for musicians in the recorded music industry. We need to research Free Music Archive’s (FMA) stakeholders e.g. musicians, netlabels, curators, media makers and open content enthusiasts, listen to their input and at the same time address some fundamental challenges. If you share our passion for FMA and open content in general, join us during this interactive knowledge sharing session co-hosted by Grant for the Web.

Let’s the Chapters work together: approaches to a CC licenses glossary/thesaurus for connecting users and the community
Italian and Argentine Chapters are studying the opportunity to build up a Glossary/Thesaurus of CC licenses in the Italian and Spanish languages trying to make it broader, to be presented in Latin America, Spain and Italy with the target of a more inclusive study. The final goal is to fix a work methodology suitable for the creation of a shared platform that could be used as a base for the translation of the Glossary/Thesaurus in all the Chapter’ languages. The feasibility study focuses on a specific case study target group which is the scholarly community which offers online open courses.

Seeds as a commons: open source seeds licences and initiatives
As 60% of the world seeds are sold by four giant companies, all around the world the idea of open source seeds is flourishing as an act of resistance against patents and privatization. From Philippines to USA, Kenya, Germany, Austria and Argentina, a handful of organisations are working on open source seeds licences, platforms and protocols, inspired by open source software and Creative Commons movements. The goal is to ensure biodiversity to fight hunger: the seeds commons as a real alternative for agroecology. Can we think about biological material the same way we think about software, hardware or art?

Es bonito, ¿pero que significa?
¿Es bonito, pero que significa? Un argumento a favor de etiquetar nuestras fotografías de acceso abierto como fotografía representativa o arte fotográfico. In recent times many approaches for computationally detecting manipulations of digital photographs have been developed. However, these time intensive analyses are out of step with today's rapid-fire online image consumption. Far less emphasis is placed on photographers proactively asserting the authenticity of images. It is time for our online photos to be clearly labelled as real or fake, and open access is a great place to start.

Creative Commons Indonesia Training of Trainers (CCID-ToT): An Effort to Grow Creative Commons Community in Indonesia
CC has existed in Indonesia since 2011; a lot of efforts have been made like an advocate, translate and adapt licenses & books, promote CC. Besides, the demand from the community to get to know CC has increased significantly, which can be shown by a lot of invitation for event participation as a speaker in workshops conducted in various cities in Indonesia. To fulfill that high demand & to grow the communities by getting new active members, CC Indonesia initiated a program called CCID-ToT. This proposal will be about the challenges, opportunities that we faced and the impact of CCID-ToT.

Sharing is caring? Unintended consequences of Open.
The session will engage the audience in the conversation about unintended consequences of open and free content in late capitalism. From the usage of CC-licensed images for facial recognition training, to the lock-in of free content provided by volunteers into proprietary products that don’t give back to the society in the same form - what should be our movement’s response? Should we even care about cooptation of open content into surveillance and unethical practices? And if yes, is there anything we can do to ensure the unintended consequences be prevented?

Trying to grow communities: What we learned about Wikimedia communities in 2020
At Wikimedia Deutschland we are facing a variety of challenges in our goal to strengthen and grow our communities: A declining number of volunteers, a homogeneous community, infamous for its tone and our hands are tied when it comes to changes to the software. After years of trial and error we successfully changed our approaches in 2020 and developed two new campaign formats and conducted a research project in Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons to understand successful entryways into Free Knowledge. This talk aims at sharing our insights and connecting them to the Commons communities.

Data Protection as a Commons
We live in an increasingly data-driven society. As companies collect more of our personal data, we become less powerful in controlling how our data is used. While solutions exist, they often rely on individuals having a high level of understanding of the resources available. Building on Elinor Ostrom’s work on the commons, we created a framework for a data protection-focused commons that encourages collaboration and co-creation in the data protection process. This session aims to spark discussions about how we can shift the public conversation on personal data to one that is communal, treating data protection as a common good.

Trusting Openness in Ethical Tech: Building Trustworthy AI
How can we enrich the commons while building tech that helps rather than harms? FOSS was founded on principles protecting user rights (to use, remix & share software). Through mechanisms like licenses, transparency, and collaboration, open source thrived and transformed our digital world. We’re at a similar crossroad today – AI is staged to change the digital landscape, but limited by questions of ethics and user rights. Taking lessons from open source, we’ll explore the concept of building trustworthy AI by working open and using new data stewardship technologies like data trusts.
