Data Protection as a Commons

We live in an increasingly data-driven society. As companies collect more of our personal data, we become less powerful in controlling how our data is used. While solutions exist, they often rely on individuals having a high level of understanding of the resources available. Building on Elinor Ostrom’s work on the commons, we created a framework for a data protection-focused commons that encourages collaboration and co-creation in the data protection process. This session aims to spark discussions about how we can shift the public conversation on personal data to one that is communal, treating data protection as a common good.
