Wellcome Collection is committed to providing a free and unrestricted digital space. Through our digitisation strategy, we aim to digitise our collections under open licences. We take a risk-managed approach to copyright to increase access to modern materials. We release our code as OS software, employ open APIs and have a strong preference for using open source software from others. We are transparent what we do, seek feedback from users and peers, and show our work. Such an open approach is proving beneficial to us and our users, far outweighing the risks, as this paper will demonstrate.
